5 Things Every Business Should Do for Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Oct 2, 2026 | Uncategorized

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, making it the perfect time for businesses to take a fresh look at their cybersecurity practices. Cyber threats continue to evolve, and businesses of every size are targets for phishing, ransomware, business email compromise, and other attacks. The good news is that improving your security posture does not have to be complicated. Here are five important steps every business should take to better protect its people, data, and technology.

1. Require Strong Passwords and Multi-Factor Authentication

Passwords remain one of the easiest ways for cybercriminals to gain access to business accounts. Require employees to use strong, unique passwords and consider a password manager for securely storing credentials. Most importantly, enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible. MFA adds another layer of protection even if a password is compromised.

2. Keep Software and Devices Updated

Outdated operating systems, applications, browsers, and network devices can contain vulnerabilities that cybercriminals know how to exploit. Make sure security patches and updates are installed promptly across computers, servers, mobile devices, and business applications. Don’t overlook third-party software and AI applications that employees may be using.

3. Train Employees to Recognize Cyber Threats

Your employees are an important part of your cybersecurity strategy. Regular security awareness training can help employees recognize phishing emails, suspicious links, social engineering attempts, and business email compromise. Training should be ongoing rather than a once-a-year exercise, because today’s scams are increasingly convincing.

4. Protect and Test Your Backups

A reliable backup can be critical if your business experiences ransomware, hardware failure, or another disruptive event. Maintain secure, properly protected backups of important business data—and don’t assume that having backups means you’re fully protected. Test your backups regularly to make sure your data can actually be restored when needed.

5. Review Your Overall Security Posture

Cybersecurity is not a one-time project. Take time to review your business’s current defenses, including endpoint protection, email security, vulnerability scanning, access controls, backup and recovery, and employee security practices. A trusted technology advisor can help identify gaps and prioritize improvements based on your business’s specific risks.

How Businesses Can Improve Cybersecurity

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a great reminder that protecting your business requires ongoing attention. By strengthening authentication, keeping technology updated, educating employees, protecting backups, and regularly reviewing your security posture, you can reduce risk and improve your organization’s ability to respond to today’s cyber threats.
